The Macrogonus cactus contains mescaline, a psychoactive alkaloid with potent psychedelic and entheogenic effects. Users of mescaline attest to strong visual effects, an altered conscious, feelings of euphoria and intense harmony with nature. The normal dosage of mescaline is 0.3-0.4 gram (pure mescaline, not 0.3-0.4 grams of cactus). The consumption of mescaline cacti can induce heavy vomiting. According to original users this purging should be experienced as a positive one, since it is the cleansing of the body.

For the fanatics: the chemical formula for mescaline is 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine.

Trichocereus Macrogonus

Trichocereus macrogonus belongs to the sacred cacti that are native to South America. Similar in appearance to the more-known Peruvian Torch (Trichocereus peruviana), this cactus contains the powerful psychoactive alkaloid mescaline and plays an important role in shamanic and spiritual rituals.

It is not exactly known where Trichocereus macrogonus originated from. Some say the cactus was discovered in Bolivia although no species of it can be found in Bolivia today. Others think that the cactus’ origin is possibly Brazil or Argentina. The cactus grows in columns and can reach a height of 3 meters with an average diameter of 3-5cm, some specimens can grow even wider. The cactus has a typical frosty, blueish colour. It contains less than 1% of 3, 4 dimethoxyphenylethylamine, less than 1% of 3-methoxytyramine, less than 1% of tyramine and more than 5% of mescaline.

Growing Trichocereus macrogonus is very easy and comparable to as if you were to grow the San Pedro cactus or the Peruvian Torch. Trichocereus macrogonus is a very hardy and resilient cactus that only needs the bare necessities to grow well. It needs very little water and then only in the hottest growing season. In summer it is sufficient if you water it once per week. Just make sure that you allow the soil to dry out between watering and the cactus will thrive.
